    Intimidating coaches

As sports parents, it's critical for you to be prepared to protect your young athletes. If you think this issue won't ever come up in your kids' sports careers, think again. Are too many parents making a “deal with the devil” and turning their kids over to coaches with questionable methods just because these coaches supposedly produce “champions?” As a coach, just how important is winning to you?John O’Connor, head basketball coach at Holy Family University, was caught on video last week shoving one of his players to the ground with a forearm to the neck.Since the incident occurred, the video has gone viral and caused people nationwide to talk about where the line should be drawn when it comes to coaching athletes ().What’s more, coaches who use such negative feedback are generally focused too much on one thing: winning the game or competition.

Unfortunately when it comes to sports, some coaches have gotten away with being intimidating toward their players for far too long, at times even crossing the line into physical aggression. What is wrong with a society that places so much importance on winning in sports that it blatantly neglects the needs and well being of the child-athletes that it’s charged with educating and protecting? Are we that out of touch that we’ve lost our perspective on what really matters in life? These coaches also target gifted athletes because they believe their approach will "toughen up" their athletes. It's important to keep in mind that most volunteer coaches are not trained.
